Microgaming Casino Software

By: Ken Johnson / Last Update: 19 Jan 2015

Microgaming are pioneers of the online casino industry and few have pushed the boundaries of what is possible as much as they have. Some would even argue that without Microgaming’s vision, the whole online gambling landscape would look totally different. Boasting a huge collection of games including a blackjack selection that cannot be beaten for both number of titles and variety, Microgaming continue to innovate. Given the fact that they offer such high-quality games and services, they’ve become the software of choice for numerous online gambling operators, the best of which, in our humble opinion, are 32Red, Spin Casino and Betway. Check out below what they have to offer:

Overall – Microgaming offer everything you would expect from a casino software giant with years of experience. Their licensing of top films and TV shows help engage their audience. Live casino is still not as strong as others such as Playtech and some of the slots feel almost the same as each other. It would be unfair to end on a negative point though as they have a huge range of titles and have a reputation that is second to none.

Quickfire – A Surefire Hit with Mobile Gamers

From an online casinos point of view it is easy to see why many operators choose Microgaming, they have built a robust but flexible platform called Quickfire which not only delivers Microgaming’s products but also acts as a delivery platform for other developers such as NextGen, Quickspin, Genesis Gaming, Push Gaming, Rabcat, Leander games among others.

This allows over 400 online games to be available through the customers browser without the need to download any software. Whilst the library of titles is not as large as using the download client, many of the games that are missing tend to be older games which is not a bad thing as many of them look rather dated now.

Mobile Platfrom from Microgaming at a glance:

If you are a fan of progressive jackpots then your needs are well catered for as a mobile or tablet user, with a network that has over 100 operators the jackpots can quickly reach a serious amount of cash. Games such as King Cashalot, The Dark Knight, Major Millions and of course the world famous Mega Moolah. The current progressive jackpot total is in excess of 4.5 million.
The tie-in games such as Hitman, Tomb Raider, Battlestar Galactica are also available on mobile devices and look fantastic with the higher resolution screens. As they are HTML5 games, as long as you have a fairly recent device then they will play fine in your mobile browser.

Quickfire Timeline - Infographic

As you can see from the above timeline, the speed of progress has been amazing. The Mini and Nano games produced by Quickfire allow casino operators the ability to embed smaller versions of popular games on their sites. This facility can make sites more engaging to customers with a larger selection of games available on one page.

Despite the Mini games only being 330 x 250 pixels and the Nano ones 200 x 200 pixels the games still offer the same functionality and playability as their full size offerings.

What also make Microgaming stand out is that they release games very regularly with new game releases averaging five games every month. This means when you choose a Microgaming casino the content changes often and feels fresh and new.

Top 10 Games from Microgaming

It’s great to know that the software of a certain provider is safe and works without any hiccups, but that’s not what makes us want to play online. It’s the games. Check out in the slider below the top 10 games, rated by us, the editorial team of bestonlinecasino.co.uk and our online friends.

  • Jurassic Park Slot
    Jurassic Park Slot by Microgaming

Based on the classic 1993 Steven Spielberg film, this amazing 243-pay-line slot will keep you entertained for hours. Featuring beautiful graphics with parallax scrolling of the landscape and awesome sound, this is a next generation fruit machines of the highest standard. You never know when the awesome T-Rex will make an appearance and with multipliers hitting 6x, a big win could just be a spin away. Featuring wild nudges, mystery multipliers and wild Velociraptors running amok, this is a showcase Microgaming slot.

  • Fish Party Slot
    Microgaming's Fish Party Slot

If cute is your thing then you will be over the moon with this ‘nemo-ish’ offering from Microgaming. This 243-pay-line slot doesn’t have as many features or bonus rounds as other online fruit machines but it certainly has the ‘awwww’ factor. The beautiful cartoon style graphics really bring this aquatic adventure to life, get three or more matching symbols and your fishy friends start moving and dancing to share in your joy. Being a low to medium variance game means you are never too far away from your next win spin.

  • The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Slot Presented by Microgaming Casinos

The caped crusader stars in this Microgaming realisation of the 1993 classic Batman film. Featuring Batman played by Christian Bale with Gary Oldman as Lt. Jim Gordon they team up to fight the Joker played by the amazing Heath Ledger in which was tragically his last completed film. The slot itself is simply stunning and features the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot which is won via a bonus game. All together there are 4 jackpots that can be won. Get 3 of more scatter symbols and you are awarded 15 free spins with a x2 multiplier.

  • Deuces Wild LEVEL UP Poker
Deuces Wild Level Up by Microgaming

Microgaming have a stunning range of video poker games available to play, one of our favourites is Level-up video poker. Each time you have a winning hand you move onto the next level with each level you are given a x2 multiplier over the previous level on any wins. This means you can boost your winnings to a massive x8! The payouts are very generous too, full house pays at 15 times your stake, however manage to get a natural royal flush and the payout is a staggering 4000 times your stake. See our review at 32Red for more information.

  • Terminator 2
Terminator Two Slot Powered by Microgaming

Films have the power to define a generation and the Terminator series of films certainly does that for us! In this slot based on the Terminator sequel set eleven years after the original film sees a young John Connor trying to avoid the shape shifting T-1000 with the help of a revamped T-800 played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This 243 win line slot features clips from the film to bring the action to life. What we really love is the free spins, when active the slot becomes a whopping 1024 win line slot. The feature doesn’t happen much but when it does, it pays!

  • Hold’em high Gold Series
Microgaming Poker Hold'em High Gold Series

We love this table poker game, perhaps because we always seem to do well on it so maybe we are a bit biased. This fast-paced poker game is really easy to play and understand. You have the option to place a side bet that you will be dealt 2 cards of the same suit, this pays at 5:2. However, if you manage to get dealt a king and an ace of spades this pays a very nice 50:1 and this is even before the main draw! For the main part of the game the lowest win is 2 pairs and one of those pairs has to be jacks or higher, which pays a modest 1:1 but in our experience keeps you playing quite a while. Higher payouts are 7:1 for a flush and 500:1 for a royal flush.

  • Playboy Live Casino Roulette
    Live Dealer Roulette at Microgaming

This Playboy-themed live casino is likely to get any red-blooded males pulse racing and not just because of the excitement on the tables! As you would expect from a live casino offering from Microgaming, the video quality is excellent and the lovely ladies are always smiling and chatting as the table action hots up. We love the statistics panel that show “hot” and “cold” numbers, we know that numbers are never “due” to win in roulette but we just cannot help ourselves sometimes. If you have never played “live” roulette, this could be the one for you.

  • Max Damage
    Max Damage Powered by Microgaming

This 243-pay-line slot has been receiving a lot of promotion on quite a few sites recently and it’s easy to see why! The graphics are crisp and clear and have a typically Microgaming feel to them. Like many of the other slot offerings the gameplay doesn’t rely on interactive bonus rounds but a simpler free spins feature. This makes the gameplay very simple, during the free spins a single alien spaceship may appear on each reel which the fabulous Max will shoot to earn you a reward. This also turns the alien spaceship into a wild symbol.

  • So Much Candy
    Microgaming's So Much Candy Slot

In this modern world, life can be complicated, fast and hectic! Sometimes you don’t want interactive features and 1000’s of win lines, you need something simple and relaxing. This is why So Much Candy from Microgaming is a breath of fresh air, it’s a 25-win-line slot that looks great but very simple to play. Simple doesn’t mean boring though as the graphics are bright, clean and effective with great sound which give this a ‘candy crush saga’ feel to the game. So if you like your fun simple, this is definitely a game you should try.

  • Double Bonus Power Poker
Double Bonus Power Poker by Microgaming

This is the third video poker game to reach our top 10, this fast action game is great to play and a fun twist on video poker. You are dealt 5 cards and have the option to hold cards, you are then dealt 4 hands and if any of these hands make up a standard ‘jacks or higher’ hand you win money for each one. It’s a great feeling if you get dealt a fantastic hand straight away and you know that you will win with each of the next 4 hands dealt. As with the Deuces wild game a Royal Flush pays 4000 times your initial bet.

Microgaming Live Casino Games Overview

Despite being one of the world’s first casino software providers, it is fair to say that Microgaming turned up to the ‘live dealer’ party very late and did not release their first live game until 2006 which was baccarat.

Indeed it wasn’t until 2010 that they finally released blackjack into their live games portfolio. They did however add a few features on release that wasn’t available at the competition.

‘Bet Behind’ allowed players to bet on other players’ boxes which gives you the chance to share in the success (and failure) of that player, if you felt they had a good chance of winning you could back them to win. This approach meant that there was no limit to the amount of players who could bet on the play of already seated players. It also meant players could bet on more than one hand at once.

Also a waiting list function was introduced which allowed you to queue for a table that you liked the look of and once an opening was available you would then receive a notification that a space was available.

The look and feel of the live casino offering was also given a lick of paint with the old plain blue screen being replaced with a real casino gaming floor. Players also had the option to change the quality of the video streaming to match their Internet connection.

Depending on the casino that uses Microgaming software, games can be played directly from your browser (instant play) or by downloading Microgaming’s ‘Viper’ software. The viper software brings features that are not available in browser mode such as auto-play, expert-play among others.

Microgaming does not have the variety of tables like Playech and if you wish to know more about the individual games and rules then why not read our Playtech review by clicking here.

Microgaming Live Casino Tables

Baccarat Live 2 3 £10 – £500
Baccarat Live Multiplayer 2 19 £10 – £500
Baccarat Live Multiplayer Playboy 1 1 £10 – £500
Roulette Live 1 3 £0.50 – £25
Roulette Live Multiplayer 1 18 £0.50 – £25
Roulette Live Multiplayer Playboy 1 1 £0.50 – £10
Blackjack Live Multiplayer 2 2 £10 – £1,000
Blackjack Live Multiplayer Playboy 1 1 £10 – £1,000

Please note this information can change depending on the time of day and is just for indication only. In our honest opinion the Microgaming live casino is not the strongest feature of their platform, it’s not that it is bad but it doesn’t compare favourably next to Playtech’s offerings. They do feature everything you would expect but just don’t have the wow factor.

The Story of Microgaming

Timeline of the Microgaming Casino Software

  • The history of Microgaming starts back in 1994 and the company claim that they were the first to develop and release software that was able to power an online casino. It is this innovation that would become synonymous with the Microgaming brand. When Microgaming first started they were an online casino rather than the software provider they are today, however they decided that their talents would be put to better use if they concentrated on making a software platform rather than the day to day running of an online casino.
  • In the early days the world of online gambling was pretty much unregulated, so to combat the stigma of unscrupulous casinos Microgaming became a founding member of the Interactive Gaming Council who were involved in the self-regulation of this fledgling industry.
  • Microgaming launched Cash Splash which was the first wide area progressive slot.
  • 2000 saw the company release their first instant-play slots which didn’t require the customer to install any client software, this experience would be very useful in the coming years and would lay the groundwork for the mobile phone explosion that was to come.
  • Microgaming launches the first 9-line pay out progressive jackpot slot Treasure Nile
  • In 2003 Microgaming became a founding member of the e-Commerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance scheme (eCOGRA) which was an independent body which dealt with consumer issues and standardised testing criteria to ensure all games were fair and transparent.
  • 2004 was a huge year for Microgaming as they launched their mobile game platform as with most online casino operators this would prove to be a pivotal moment in the company timeline. This year also saw them release their first licensed branded slot game in the shape of the highly popular Tomb Raider slot featuring Laura Croft. This would spark a licensing regime that the company still follows today.
  • In 2009 Microgaming hit two milestones by releasing its 300th online slots title and then in the same year one of its slots, the infamous Mega Moolah Paid out the biggest jackpot in online gambling history with a payout of over $6 million.
  • By 2013 Microgaming was becoming the software provider of choice for over 130 brands worldwide and was a firm casino fans favourite, new titles were being constantly added which pushed the boundaries of online play. This growth is continuing to this day and with their progressive jackpot network paying out over £335 million to date, it is easy to see why many rate them as the top casino software producer.
  • 2014 Microgaming signs licensing agreements for Terminator 2™, Jurassic Park™ and Game of Thrones™.
